How Not to Be an A-hole When…

I’VE MADE IT

I had another essay in the works for tonight. I’ll post it eventually, but it’s not quite there yet. Thankfully this gem rolled into my inbox and I just was so excited that I had to share.

Want more clients and customers? We will help them find you by putting you on the 1st page of Google. Please reply to this message and we will prepare a special proposal for you. Thanks you very much.

People. People. PEOPLE!

Can you believe it? I’ve made it! Someone important noticed this site and is offering to put together a special proposal JUST FOR ME. I’m so lucky.

And it gets better. On another site I manage, I received this clearly reliable offer:

I just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know that we just recently released a very comprehensive blog post on [topic I discussed briefly once].

While browsing your site, I noticed you linked to another article on the same topic from this page [blog post of mine].
What do you think about replacing the existing link [which directs to a proper scientific study] with ours, as it’s more comprehensive, up to date, and quotes more trustworthy sources.

If you were willing to add our link to that page, I would be more than happy to share it to our tens of thousands of social followers to help you gain some visibility in exchange.

Here is the link for your review:
[Clearly biased information that directly contradicts the link they would like replaced, because they are shilling sketchy products]

Let me know what you think and thank you for your consideration!

I just — I feel so lucky right now. Clearly these people are really connecting to my work. These are not in any way spam messages from bots that scan the internet and try to convince people to either post their bullshit or accidentally step into a phishing scam.

Nope, this is all 100% legitimate.
